2009 EMMY AWARDS

At this year's Emmy Awards, some dresses were a Hit, some were a Miss, but sadly, none were homeruns :(

Here's my take:

Jennifer Love Hewitt wearing Max Azria
JLove Hewitt looks like a real life fairy princess! This buttery yellow is perfect with her gold-toned skin, and because the dress is quite simple, her long locks don't overpower the dress. Sweet.

Mila Kunis wearing Monique Lhuillier
Mila hit the fashion nail on its head with this crimson number from Monique Lhuillier (love, love, love!). This jewel tone is perfect for Mila's mediterranean skin. And the best style decision was to match her shoes - and NOT her lip color - with the dress.

Toni Collette also in Monique L'huillier
Toni looks perfectly balanced in this gorgeous, hot pink number from Monique Lhuillier (did I mention I LOVE her?!?!). Toni obviously has a killer frame - with her entire torso covered corset-style, it's not easy to look perfectly proportioned in this bold number.

January Jones wearing Versace
My new fave character on Mad Men looks sophisticated and sexy all at once in this brilliant Versace design! It's always a risk to wear a formal dress that has the appearance of a two-piece (beware of the Mother of the Bride effect). But January's narrow frame perfectly complements the flared waist and hip-hugging skirt.

Not so much...

Elisabeth Moss wearing Reem Acra
Elisabeth Moss, also a leading character on Mad Men, looks washed out, wrinkly (the dress, not her), but even more disappointingly, she looks unhappy. I hate to be so critical since she looks quite sad, but this is exactly why Stylists exist. A professional stylist would never pair a chunky neck piece with this dress - it interferes with the neckline of the dress and ends up making Elisabeth looks stalky instead of lean; the color is too close to her skin tone and it's pink hues are making her look too pale. Sorry Ms. Moss.

Marcia Gay Harden wearing Badgley Mischka
I adore Badgley Mischka designs - they're sexy and more sexy. Who doesn't want to look sexy?! Unfortunately, we can't all pull off Mischka-sexy. Including Marcia Gay Harden. Whom, I know is now a Mother (of twins, in fact) and suffers from a bit of a mummy tummy. But the stretched print around the center of this dress is calling attention to her mid-section. And those boobs. Oy, she looks top-heavy and I was afraid she would topple over. I could only breathe easy once she was off the red carpet and seated. I'm pretty sure that's when her breathing became strained. So who can pull of Mischka-sexy?

Padma Lakshmi, of course!
Proportion Pefect!

Kate Walsh wearing J. Mendel
I do give Kate credit for going for "a look" but this Mendel creation just doesn't work for her. The dress is a pale blue but ends up looking like a dirty white, and the draping around her hip and thighs looks haphazard.

Tina Fey wearing Gucci
We all have reasons for choosing Black over color. And I am aware that Sarah, er I mean Tina, is a comedic icon . Not a fashion icon. But even when you choose to play it safe with Black, does not mean you can abandon your fashion sensibilities altogether. Especially, this season where Black is making a colossal comeback! Here is an alternate option for one of my favorite funnies:
