How To Wear Red

It’s a classic look but not an easy one to achieve. Wearing a bright red lip takes both patience and practice, but the end result is so worth it.

Here is a general guide to selecting the perfect shade of red for your skin tone:

For many fair skinned women with pink undertones (with either very light or very dark hair), a true red color with blue tones will give you the perfect red lips. But generally, reds with orange or gold tones will look good on almost everyone, but most particularly if your undertones are warmer. And for dark skinned beauties, a very deep red (with pink tones) or a very bright but still bold red will take your entire look over the edge!

After selecting your red lip color (like jeans, try on as many shades to get the right match), you will need to know a couple of tricks to keep your red lips from bleeding or vanishing:

First, apply a foundation primer on and around your lips. This will help reduce any color bleeding. For extra staying power, apply a red lip stain. This will also help to bring out the true color of your lipstick. TIP: If you don’t have a red lip stain handy, you can use red food coloring (diluted with a little water). Next, apply your red lip color with a lip brush (to avoid a dated look, skip the lip liner). Finally, blend and blot your lips until you are left with an even matte finish. TIP: Apply lipstick color to your top lip first as this will help create the look of fuller lips. And please, please don’t over-do your eye makeup.

If you choose red lips as your fashion focus, keep your outfit as minimal in color as possible. Wearing black and/or white will help to showcase your new red pout.
